Dear Friends,

The Hospices de Beaune Wine Auction is coming again in November 2012!

To welcome the forth coming 152nd auction we invite you to a dinner with Anthony Hanson, Master of Wine and Senior Consultant to Christie’s auction house.

Anthony has selected 2 whites and 4 reds from the Hopsices Grand Crus & Premier Crus private collection to match with this creative Chinese cuisine.

The dinner is at the Ming Court, the 2 Michelin Star restaurant on 19th October 2012.

The menu is tailor-made by the Executive Chef Tsang. A rare opportunity to taste some of the best Burgundies like 2009 Corton-Charlemagne and 2002 Mazis-Chambertin with super high quality modern Chinese cuisine.

I look forward to seeing you this year. Reservation is required due to very limited seats.

Tanigawadake Junmai Daiginjyo at Ye Shanghai

Global’s Sales Manager, Casey Chan, visits a great eating spot with a few friends and a large bottle of Sake. Here’s what he had to say about the experience.

Tanigawadake Junmai Daginjo

Amidst the summer heat wave, for a change, my friends and I decided to have some sake with Shanghainese food at Ye Shanghai Pacific Place.

The nicely chilled Tanigawadake Junmai Daiginjyo was served in small carafes from the massive 1.8L bottle. The rich and creamy smooth rice scent went well with various small servings of cold appetizers ranging from chopped razor clams with Chinese parsley to the crunchy deep fried yellow eel which even kids would enjoy as finger snacks!

As it warmed up a bit in my nice little ceramic sake cup, more fruit aromas and fragrances emerged as well as tightly knitted structure and body. At one point, I even picked up some juicy lychees which you would get in some Gewurztraminer! Again it matched nicely with some of our main dishes such as the chewy stir-fried sliced glutinous rice pudding with Bok Choy or the hearty pot stickers served with aged vinegar.

Its subtle sweetness in mid palate even went well with our dessert for the evening – shallow fried pancakes filled with red bean paste. Many of my friends were really surprised! We managed to finish the 1.8L bottle before we finished our desserts!

So why are you still waiting? Grab a bottle of Tanigawadake Junmai Daiginjyo 1.8L from us at only $350 (even comes in an elegant gift box) and wave goodbye to the grilling heat wave!

Debra Meiburg, MW, Awarded The 2012 Vinitaly International Award

I was delighted to find out today that good friend and Hong Kong based master of wine, Debra Meiburg, has been announced as the recipient of the 2012 Vinitaly International Award.Established in 1996, the highly-regarded award recognises Italian and international personalities/companies/institutions distinguished for their commitment to the world of wine.

Without a doubt there is a major push to promote and better understand the complicated Italian wine industry by many supporters in Hong Kong and Debra has always been an active supporter of the cause.

According to the Vinitaly team, Debra was chosen for the award due to her work on behalf of the Italian wine industry in spreading Italian wine culture throughout Asia through her representation of regional wine bodies, her regular television appearances and her publications, including the “Guide to the Hong Kong Wine Trade”.

Debra also won praise from Stevie Kim, General Co-ordinator of Vinitaly International, who said “Meeting Debra Meiburg was love at first sight, we just adore her. She is a true ambassador for Italian Wines in Asia. She has been phenomenal in translating the difficult Italian Wines into a more accessible language and has contributed in our campaign Vinitaly Wine Affair”

Debra said she was both honoured and humbled by the award. “As one of the most prestigious wine exhibitions in the world today, Vinitaly is a fantastic celebration of the flourishing Italian wine industry, and offers the international wine community the chance to experience the very best Italy has to offer in an inspiring environment.

To be honest though it would be hard to mention countries that Debra hasn’t supported in Asia. From her home of California to little known producers like Israel, Debra is a true wine lover in a global sense, and her passion is infectious.

So we doff our hats to you Debra in acknowledgement of a job well done.

Château Lafite Rothschild adopts the Prooftag system

In an effort to prevent counterfeiting of arguably the worlds most famous and expensive wine, Château Lafite Rothschild have announced a new Prooftag system that will be introduced on vintages as early as 2009.

The 2nd label Carruades de Lafite  will carry the tags from the 2010 vintage. Older vintages that are released from the Château after 2012 will also include the tags.

This has been the most extensive program undertaken by a Bordeaux first growth. It will be interesting to see how long it takes before we see the first counterfeit tags on the market!

Call me a cynic!

Do you think systems like this will stem the flow of counterfeit wines in China? Leave your thoughts here.

Women in Wine

Today is International Women’s Day so I thought I would take a moment to celebrate the wonderful women that are involved in the wines that we sell and promote every day. Wine is often considered to be a man’s industry by the general public but the truth is actually far from this.

The vast majority of our portfolio is influenced by women in one way or another. From winemakers to marketers, from wine judges to business managers, the impact women have in the wine industry globally is vast and, in no small way, responsible for the success the industry enjoys.

Here are some of the women that have a part in the wines we offer:

Nadine Gublin – Winemaker Domaine Jacques Prieur, Burgundy

Nadine Gublin

Yolanda Garcia Viadero, Managing Director and winemaker, Valduero, Spain

Carolina Garcia Viadero, Commercial Director, Valduero, Spain

Joana Pinhão, Winemaker, Quinta Vale Dona Maria, Portugal

Sandra Tavares da Silva, Head Winemaker, Van Zellers, Portugal

Sarah Burvill, Wine Maker, RockBare Winemakers, Adelaide Hills, Australia

Heather Davies, Winemaker and Owner, Summerhouse, Marlborough, NZ

Dana Morris, Designer, Plumm Wine Glasses, Australia

Cindi Dean, Director, Plumm Wine Glasses, Melbourne, Australia

We are also very lucky in Hong Kong to have such influential women in wine like Jeannie Cho Lee, Debra Meiburg, Jennie Mack, Rebecca Leung, Lucy Anderson and Kavita Faiella just to name a few.

So ladies, on this special day we salute you and say thanks for making our industry better every day.
